OpenMetal: A New Era in the Cloud Saga

Technical buyers have seen every flavor of cloud marketing and tuned most of it out. So instead of another data sheet, we told OpenMetal’s story as a comic book.

The Brief

OpenMetal had just spun out as an independent brand from InMotion Hosting’s Flex Metal Cloud, and needed to introduce its on-demand private cloud platform to a deeply technical audience: developers and infrastructure teams evaluating OpenStack. That audience is famously allergic to sales language, and a dense infrastructure product does not sell itself in a bulleted data sheet.

The Approach

Build the whole piece as a real comic-book issue, cover price and issue number included, with a mascot robot as the brand’s stand-in and a “Private Clouds in 45 Seconds” hook doing the work a headline usually does. A QR code on the cover routes straight to a free trial signup, so curiosity converts to action in one scan. The story lands on the back page with the OpenStack services the platform runs and a named testimonial from the Open Infrastructure Foundation, so the fun cover is backed by real technical credibility.

What Makes It Work

  • The comic-book format signals confidence. In a category full of jargon, showing up as the one brand not taking itself too seriously stands out.
  • A mascot gives the brand a face. The robot character makes the platform feel approachable to the engineers actually configuring it.
  • The conceit is followed all the way through — cover price, issue number, publication date — which is what makes the format feel crafted rather than gimmicky.
  • One scan collapses the funnel. The QR code takes a curious reader straight from the cover to a free trial signup.
  • Credibility rides along with the fun. Open Infrastructure Foundation membership, OpenStack Powered status, and a named VP of Engineering quote ground the piece in real trust signals.

The best technical marketing doesn’t explain the product. It makes people want to turn the page.
