Expertise · Brand Building
A brand people actually remember… without a rebrand every 18 months. Real brand strategy from someone who has built brands from the inside, delivered minus the agency theater.
Brand Marketing 101
Okay, let’s clear something up right out of the gate. Your brand is not your logo. It’s not your color palette, your fancy font, or that beautiful brand book collecting dust in a shared drive somewhere. (Sorry, design team. We still love you.)
Your brand is the gut feeling people get when they hear your name. It’s what they say about you when you’re not in the room. Brand marketing is simply the work of shaping that feeling on purpose, instead of leaving it to chance, online reviews, and whatever your last sales rep said on a bad day.
Think of it like a movie theme song. Two notes of the Jaws theme and you already know to get out of the water. [Cue the cello: dun-dun… dun-dun…] That’s what a great brand does. People know what you stand for before you’ve said a word.
Logo, colors, type, and imagery. Your first impression, and yes, it matters. It just isn’t the whole show.
How you sound in every email, ad, blog, and sales call. Consistent enough that people could pick you out of a lineup.
What customers can count on, every single time. Break it, and no amount of clever copy will save you.
Why you exist, who you’re for, and why anyone should care. The one part competitors can’t copy and paste.
Get all four pulling in the same direction and you’ve got a brand. Get them fighting each other… and you’ve got a very expensive identity crisis.
Good Brand vs. Bad Brand
Here’s the thing nobody puts in the pitch deck: brand isn’t a “nice-to-have” line item that gets cut the minute the quarter gets tight. It’s the thing that makes every other marketing dollar work harder… or quietly work against you.
The Hero
The Villain
The Plot Twist
It’s not the brand people hate. It’s the one nobody remembers. Being disliked at least means someone’s paying attention. Being forgettable means you’re paying full price for marketing that evaporates the second the ad ends. [Cue the crickets.]
And in fairness to Sales: a good brand doesn’t replace a great sales team. It just makes sure they never have to make a cold introduction again.
Working With The Marketing Mindscape
Look, I’ve sat on both sides of the table. I’ve hired agencies, fired agencies, and been the in-house marketer stuck making a 90-slide “brand vision” actually work on Monday morning. So here’s how The Marketing Mindscape does it: practical, collaborative, and built to survive contact with the real world.
01
A brand audit comparing how you see yourself to how customers, prospects, and your own team actually see you. Spoiler: those are rarely the same thing.
02
Positioning and messaging that clearly says who you’re for, what you do better, and why it matters. In plain English, not buzzword bingo.
03
Visual identity and voice guidelines people will actually use. A brand system, not a brand museum.
04
Launch across your website, content, campaigns and, most importantly, Sales. If your reps can’t say it with a straight face, it isn’t your brand yet.
05
Track awareness, engagement, and pipeline impact, then tighten whatever isn’t landing. Brands are living things. Feed them.
Pick your speed: a focused brand sprint, an ongoing fractional marketing leadership engagement, or a lighter advisory setup for teams that just need an experienced sounding board.
Real Work. Real Results.
Anyone can talk a good brand game. Here are a few stories from the trenches where I actually did the work, across startups, spin-outs, and global enterprise brands.
OpenMetal · Brand Launch
When OpenMetal spun out of InMotion Hosting’s Flex Metal Cloud as its own independent brand, it had to introduce itself to developers, an audience famously allergic to sales language. So we skipped the data sheet and told the story as a comic book, robot mascot and all. Add influencer content like a freeCodeCamp tutorial series that pulled 375,000+ views and drove 1,000+ inbound cloud trials, and a brand-new name started getting real attention.
Meet your audience where they already are, in a format they already love.
Steadfast · Brand Campaign
Every cloud provider was shouting about cores and uptime. For Steadfast Simplicity Clouds, we flipped the conversation from technology to feeling with “Relax. We Got This.” and backed it with receipts: a 7.4-minute average response time and pricing up to 43% below comparable clouds. A signature green typewriter-plus-script type pairing kept it instantly recognizable from print to display.
Own a feeling, then prove it with numbers.
Panduit · Global Brand
At Panduit, the job was keeping a big, established industrial brand consistent while making it feel native in markets like the UK and EMEA, right down to “centre” and “optimise.” Then we let someone else do the bragging: IDC named Panduit a Major Player in its 2015 worldwide DCIM MarketScape, and that validation fueled campaigns, sales decks, and the website.
Consistency builds recognition. Third-party proof builds trust.
Steadfast · Brand Promise
“Partner, not vendor” is easy to say and hard to prove. For Steadfast’s Rotary Club of Chicago JOB1 sponsorship, we made the sponsorship itself the proof point, connecting the students working in Steadfast’s offices and data centers to the same partnership mindset customers get every day.
Your brand is what you do, not just what you say.
Is This You?
If you nodded at even one of those… we should talk.
